24th Sokol Colloquium
The Gustave Sokol Program on Private International Law was established in 1976 under a grant from the Gustave Sokol Fund to establish colloquia to bring together distinguished scholars, practitioners and government officials from the United States and abroad to discuss in detail a current topic of private international law. The Colloquium is sponsored each year by the University of Virginia School of Law, the Virginia Journal of International Law, and the J.B. Moore Society of International Law.
The Twenty-Fourth Sokol Colloquium, which will be hosted at the Law School from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. on April 5, 2011, is titled "International Arbitration: Prospects and Problems." The program features three panels with distinguished practitioners, scholars and government officials. The first panel will focus on general issues in international arbitration, including a presentation on "Are Arbitrators Political?" The second panel is focused on issues of private law. Presentations include "Arbitrators and the Protection of American Investment Abroad"; "Challenges to ICSID Arbitral Awards"; "Problems and Prospects in International Arbitration"; and "The Relationship Between Human Rights and Investment Law in International Arbitration". In contrast, the third panel will address arbitration and public law matters. Presentations include "Arbitration and the Law of the Sea: A Comparison of Dispute Resolution Procedures"; "Arbitration and the UN Law of the Sea Convention"; and "The Model Bilateral Investment Treaty". The Colloquium is particularly honored to have Professor William W. Park of Boston University as the Keynote Speaker. In addition to his appointment at Boston University, Professor Park is the General Editor of Arbitration International, President of the London Court of International Arbitration, and an arbitrator for the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).
Papers from the Colloquium may be submitted for publication in either the Virginia Journal of International Law or VJIL Online.
