ArticlesThe Virginia Journal of International Law publishes four times a year. We invite submissions of unpublished manuscripts on public and private international law. We occasionally also publish works that are more comparative in nature, provided that they relate to international law. The Journal welcomes submissions in the form of Articles, Notes, Essays, Book Reviews and Comments (for Notes, please visit the Note Submissions page). Our editors look favorably on research and scholarship that explores an innovative and thought-provoking area or question in international law. Article FormatAll manuscripts must be submitted in English and may be either single or double-spaced. All citations must conform to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (19th ed., 2010). Authors should be prepared to supply any cited sources upon request from our editors. In addition to the manuscript, authors must include a resume or CV, which includes a list of current publications. Submissions must not exceed 35,000 words, including footnotes. We particularly welcome the submission of articles and essays under 30,000 words, including footnotes. We regret that we are unable to return any manuscripts submitted for consideration. Due to high submissions volume, we are unable to offer feedback on articles not accepted for publication. Submitting ManuscriptsWe accept submissions on a rolling basis. We strongly recommend that all authors submit their pieces through the ExpressO online submission system. Online submission ensures the most thorough and efficient review possible. Please follow the link below to submit your manuscript: Submissions are also accepted by email (vjilsubmissions@gmail.com). Please note that we no longer accept hard-copy submissions. Before commencing review of any submission, we require (i) the submission and (ii) the author’s resume or CV, which includes a list of recent publications, and (iii) a cover letter. Eligible AuthorsWe accept submissions from legal scholars, practitioners, Ph.D., S.J.D., L.L.M., and J.D. candidates. We welcome authors from both the United States and abroad. Submissions from students and recent graduates will be considered as Notes if they were written as part of the author’s J.D. curriculum. Please see our Notes Page for more information on student-written Notes. The Selection ProcessThe Submissions Review Board of the Virginia Journal of International Law is comprised of both J.D. and L.L.M. students who are chosen from our Editorial Board. Once all pieces are received (electronic copies of the manuscript, CV, and optional cover letter), our Submissions Review Board reviews each manuscript. Final decisions regarding publication are made by the Submissions Review Editor and other members of the Executive Board. Once a manuscript has been selected for publication, the Submissions Review Editor will contact the author. Once an author has accepted our offer, the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor for Production will provide further information on production and contractual matters. The Journal seeks cutting-edge scholarship on any area of international law, and we seek to provide authors with a forum for thoughtful contribution and debate in the field. To that end, the Journal has partnered with the Opinio Juris blog, one of the most widely read international law blogs on the Internet (http://opiniojuris.org). At the time of publication of an issue, each article is featured on the blog and the Journal invites scholars in the field to offer commentary on the work. This partnership is unique to the Virginia Journal of International Law and offers authors a platform to place their scholarship at the forefront of international law. Alternatively, authors may submit a request for expedited review through the ExpressO system. Upon receiving an expedite request, we will endeavor to conduct a timely and thorough review.
